May 10, 2024

I got a new picture of my daughter in the flower field which I really like.  Then in the evening we could see something I never thought I'd get to see- aurora borealis.  It started fairly bright, with streaks of green and glowing areas of red.  At times it was hard to see, or looked like low clouds reflecting city lights, but there were no clouds.  We watched for over an hour.  Many people's photos show it brighter and with a magenta color but what we saw was a little bit dimmer and either bright green or red.  The lines ran up to a point straight above us, looking like a dome.  I adjusted my photos to look very close to what we saw color-wise, and just a little bit brighter.  My son got a time lapse from his drone as well.  Northern lights are supposed to be possible all weekend but it looks like a lot of clouds for the next few days.

The solar eclipse happened today and we were in the path of totality.  It was a really exciting experience.  We had totality for about 3 minutes.  I'm including pictures I took, a 360 degree image my son took with his drone, and a time-lapse video from his drone.

I took some pictures of the comet.  It's in the top third of the picture- the fuzzy, slightly green dot.

My neighbor bought a bunch of fireworks and set them off tonight.  The kids and I stayed in the yard and watched while my husband went over to help him.  They're already making plans for a better system to set them off next year.

I took a picture of the comet NEOWISE.  The kids said they could barely see it, but I could not see it with just my eyes as it is very faint.  In this picture, it is center and about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom of the photo.  I also got a helicopter (white line along the tree tops), and the Big Dipper with a lightning bug inside of it.

My kids made pictures with sparklers.  They were surprisingly good at drawing pictures in this way.

September 13, 2019

Today was Friday the 13th and a full moon, so any superstitious people probably had a bad day.  In the evening we had a fantastic thunderstorm with nearly constant lightning.  It's been a while since we had a storm with that much lightning.  The family turned off their computers and sat on the couch watching the show outside, while I setup my camera and took lots of photos.

I took this with my new lens.  It's not as crystal clear as I'd like, but still pretty neat.

October 3, 2015

This evening our electric went out.  Not just out, it flicked on and off quickly and repeatedly for several minutes.  I've got a reaction when the electric goes out to quickly unplug my computer so nothing bad happens to it.  But this time, I worried that everything electrical would break.  I've never seen the electric go on and off like that for so long.  After a minute or two we flipped the main breaker in the basement to make it stop.  I stepped outside and could see neighboring house lights flicking on and off for another minute or so.  It was only out for an hour or two, but I'm still worried about any appliances breaking.  So far, everything is working as far as we can tell.  After it came back on, we saw this truck driving down the road shining a light at the poles.  I'm not sure what he was looking for.

We've had rain every day for a while.  It's been rare lately to be able to see the open sky.  This evening I could see the moon beyond the few large clouds left from today's storms.

My tree out front.  It really lights up the yard, especially with the snow.
