I take a picture of the kids by the big rock every year. The first time, my oldest was a year old and shorter than the rock. Now, it's hard to even see the rock in the picture. It feels like the rock is shrinking.

We went on a walk in the woods with my friend and her family. This is a new park nearby. The trail to get back here hardly looks like a public area, but it is now. The woods were very pretty, with lots of sugar maples.

It's getting darker every morning when we go out for my son's bus. I was able to see quite a few stars this morning. I think the two in the picture are actually Venus and Saturn.

We had a heavy frost last night. It was cold enough for a surprisingly thick layer of ice to form on the water in the bed of our pickup.

We got the rest of the garden in. Well, the stuff that would be hurt by frost, as it's supposed to get cold tonight.

My brother is making another pulpit for a church. They wanted a dove. I created the dove on the computer, then we finally got our machine working again and carved it out. It took around 12 hours though, as our machine isn't too good for this. I am hoping we can carve some smaller ones that don't take nearly as long to mill as this one did.

Today we dug potatoes. It seemed to be faster and easier than years past. Only reason I could come up with was that the kids are older and more of them have become more help than hinderance. Here they are with some of our russets. About a third of them had lots of knobs on them. It's edible, but will be a nuisance to clean and peel.

We mowed the front yard today, for the first time in about two months. It was so dry in August, the grass took a while to recover once it started raining again.

My daughter worked on her October project. This one was to draw a leaf and write a story inside it. She likes to write, and after 3 typed pages I had to remind her to finish it up soon (or it'd be a novel finished next month). She ended up with 7 pages... a big difference from the boys, who would have been doing good to get 7 sentences.

A barn near me is being torn down. I could see it from my parent's house, so it will be strange for it to no longer exist.

This evening our electric went out. Not just out, it flicked on and off quickly and repeatedly for several minutes. I've got a reaction when the electric goes out to quickly unplug my computer so nothing bad happens to it. But this time, I worried that everything electrical would break. I've never seen the electric go on and off like that for so long. After a minute or two we flipped the main breaker in the basement to make it stop. I stepped outside and could see neighboring house lights flicking on and off for another minute or so. It was only out for an hour or two, but I'm still worried about any appliances breaking. So far, everything is working as far as we can tell. After it came back on, we saw this truck driving down the road shining a light at the poles. I'm not sure what he was looking for.

The potato patch is getting weedy, but we're going to dig them soon. It's been cloudy and raining for a while, so we need to wait for it to be dry. We didn't get any good pumpkins this year. Maybe the weather was too wacky for them.
