I had to take my son to school at 6 AM this morning. He beat out his classmates (including the ones in the next grade up) to qualify for a regional competition. The contest was in his 'major', engineering. He got third place at the regional today, and will get to go to a state competition in April. I guess it's unusual for a younger kid to go, so we're extra proud of him.

The cat likes to lay in bed with my daughter when she goes to sleep. However, this being Friday my daughter gets to stay up later. This is our cat's angry face an hour after bedtime.

My neighborhood is just a series of parallel snow piles. But at least the kids went to school today, after getting 4 snow days in a row plus the weekend.

We got more snow today. It was heavy during the morning. The grocery store plowman seemed to be having trouble keeping up with it.

The grader came by today. He graded a knee high mound of hard packed snow into the driveway. It's interesting how the snow piles along the road vary depending on the ground to the north and west. Just down the road a few hundred feet there's only a few inches of snow plowed alongside the road, while there's a few feet by my driveway. I added 'move the driveway 100 feet south' to my list of things I'd do if we won the lottery and had money to burn.

One of the boys in my daughter's class gave all the girls in their class a rose for Valentine's day. It opened up today and looks nice. It even smells good, too.

It warmed up a little bit, so he plowed the softened snow. He plowed enough to widen out the driveway (to make room for future snow, since this doesn't seem likely to melt any time soon).

Our driveway keeps getting filled in with snowdrifts. It wasn't very windy last night, but we still got these drifts a few feet into the drive.

When the communities went to buy road salt for this winter, they say the price shot up significantly. I guess that's why they aren't salting our road very often (maybe once per storm, every week or so). This is the most I've seen of the asphalt for a while. Yesterday the road had a nice thick layer of snow/ice, complete with a few chuckholes. Then this morning they put something on the road. It was dark like cinders, but the snow melted... in a few places. It caused a horribly bumpy road due to the thousands of potholes that formed in the packed snow layer. I'm sure a railroad track would have been a smoother ride. I was glad when it started snowing this evening, filling in the holes somewhat.

Our family activity of the day was bringing in wood, during the snowstorm. School called at 9 PM and said they've got their fifth snow day tomorrow.

My nephews spent the night today. They played Minecraft, of course. They built stables and captured a bunch of horses.
