The annual potato harvest. By the time we were done, we had filled all our sacks, that little red trailer and every bucket we had. It was a good year for potatoes... I may have to come up with more potato recipes.

I was cleaning out my closet and came across this in an old teacher's math book from 1856. I knew I had it, just hadn't seen it for a while. It came from a relative of my maternal grandmother. It's interesting to read it and wonder what it was like in 1866. There are little bumps on the back of the paper as if the (dotted) lines were made with a typewriter, though I'd imagine certificates like this would have been printed with a printing press. I also enjoy looking at the handwriting from those times, it is elegant. I also noticed how they had to hand-write an 's' in front of 'he', for the part about 'which (s)he is authorized...'. I had to look up 'orthography'...nowadays we call it 'spelling'. Social studies, history, and for the most part science are not listed as subjects. Times sure are different now.

Lots of spider webs on the grass. We thought it sort of looked like telephone lines running across the ground.

Grapes I pulled off the vines. They're small and look like blueberries. They're about the size of peas. This big glass bowl was 1 bucket worth, and took several hours to pick clean. At least cooking it into jelly is easy.

Grape jelly. I didn't dilute the juice with much water and it's very strong. But it tastes really good baked into muffins that way.

We picked the wild grapes today. Got 3 1/2 buckets. The vine has grown a bit since last we picked grapes from it. It might be twice as big and spread on each side of where it started.
