We got 2 dump trucks of fill sand. Since the ground slopes so much, we have a lot of filling in to do. (I'd hate to see how much fill you need on a real hill!)

The trees looked pretty with the sun shining on them, although a couple minutes after this picture I had to run to the house through the rain and sleet. But the sun was still shining, so there was a rainbow glowing against the dark clouds.

My nephew came to "help" this afternoon. He did surprisingly well for a little kid, watching my dad, doing as he did and getting some cement up there on the blocks.

October 19, 2013
My husband didn't have to go to work today (it's Saturday), so he finally got to help out with block. Until it started raining again.
October 18, 2013
It was finally nice and we got a whole day of work in. My younger son would suddenly show up every time the cement mixer was started, and then would disappear soon after it was turned off. The boy likes machines.
October 17, 2013
We had block delivered today (he sunk in a little and took about 5 minutes or so of spinning to make it back to the driveway). We got a few block layed before it rained.

There was some extra cement left from the footers. I had dug out this area for any extra, and was suprised we had enough to fill it up (and another little pad by the basement steps). I think this will be a nice place to put a little fence to hang towels on for when we go swimming, and stand here to dry off.

October 14, 2013
My father, father-in-law and I spent the day getting the trench ready for inspection. We also got the drain tiles covered back up.
October 13, 2013
We got the footer dug for the barn today, as well as a trench for two drain tiles that needed to be re-routed around the barn.

We were outside working on stuff for the barn and my daughter wasn't really helping. Then she started whining about lunch, so I retorted, "Since you're not working, go in and make lunch for the rest of us!" She smiled, said OK and took off running to the house. I had one of those parental 'oh-no-what-have-I-done' moments. She made these for us (she had seen something similar in a kids cookbook). When I came in she was half done, I had to tell her to put more on than a tiny shred of lunchmeat, that lunchmeat will fold to go on those skewers. But she was really happy about making those, so looks like it's time to start making her help with supper!

This is about as big as spiders come in my part of the world. It has a large web that runs from the gutter to the burning bush below. It's web strands are covered in tiny flies, so it's doing a good job! It's shy, though. It sits, curled up almost in a ball, in the middle of the web a little bit above the bush. But when a person comes near it runs up to the gutter and curls up into a ball again up there.

I went on a field trip with my nephew to the apple orchard. The trees are covered with huge apples this year. They must have been baking apple pies while we were there, as it smelled so good. I think half the chaperones walked out of there with a bought pie (smart business decision!). It was a nice day, and the kids seemed to really enjoy the trip.

Some of the potatoes in our wagon. They're a bit heavy for the little wheels on the wagon and so it was put up on blocks.
